It was so incredibly sad to read of the mass shooting that took place in America yesterday and it brought to mind Tara's recent post on gun ownership over on her blog at Paris Parfait.

An extract: They talked about how she'd taken a class to become certified and how they'd shopped for a gun. She said most of the guns were "too big and bulky" to carry, although she'd finally settled on a smaller model - a .38-caliber - and paid an extra $200 for the weapon's red laser sight. Then she talked about walking into an antiques mall and finding a small French "muff gun," - the kind that women in the 18th-and-19th centuries carried hidden inside fur muffs, designed to warm their hands. And how she'd wanted to buy it - she'd gone home to tell her husband: "Now that's a gun I could carry," - but the shop proprietor told her American bullets wouldn't fit the French gun.

v-grrrl also wrote a rather thought-provoking post over on her blog here.

The focus is always on the guns, the police, the security and NOT on the urge to pull the trigger.

I also linked to V-grrrl. I posted an item right after the shooting started [resulting in 400 hits in 1 hour, and 20 (deleted) abusive comments..]
questioning the US gun laws, and the general acceptance of owning/carrying guns in the USA.

If US citizens actually feel the pressing need to carry 200 million guns for their own security, there must be something horribly wrong domestically in the US. (Well, there is..)

Thanks for the nod. Yes there is something wrong w/ a society that feels the need to carry guns for protection. Last night at dinner in Normandy my husband and I teamed up to challenge our guests about their guns and the reason behind their behaviour - and I think we made real headway with the lawyer. We talked about the laws of attraction and how if you expect something bad to happen, it will, etc. etc. Too late and too tired to go into it now. (It was cold, foggy and misty in Normandy, but gorgeous. Photos tomorrow). xo
