Sometimes, I feel the need to mix beauty and truth ... both exist.
Sunflowers in full bloom, stories of entire families wiped out while they sleep.
The innocence of children as opposed to the body counts from places like Rwanda, Iraq, Lebanon and New York city's 9/11.
Anne Frank's hiding place and canalside cafes on a summer's day.
All exists, side by side, I do know it ... but I wonder, if we remain silent, are we complicit?
I've been wondering about that too.
ReplyDeleteAt times I even feel guilty about Israel, although everything that made the creation of that state possible (inclucding Europe's involvement in it) happend at least 20 years before I was born.
Still I feel my grandparent's generation made the wrong choices and mostly because they felt guilty. They tried to get rid of their guilt by giving Israel what it wanted, not caring about inflicting pain on others. And now the past catches up with the present.
Amen! All parties involved in the current conflict are guilty (see my most recent post Shameful Acts). Sadly, it's always the innocents and the children who suffer most. Heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteHi daily dog, it gets more and more difficult the longer it goes on.
ReplyDeleteThe ancient curse comes to mind ... 'May you live in interesting times.'
Thanks Paris Parfait :)
Maybe, by being silent we don't concur, and in a dangerous world that often requires strength.
ReplyDeleteAnil, I have opened two of your comments now and both made me laugh to myself, at myself ...
ReplyDeleteI guess we all find our own way to express self.
The photographs of the stone people capture the way that I feel about this conflict ... I'm just a little noisier than them.
Silence is fascinating ... it can be the ultimate weapon of power.
Powerful actions can be carried out in silence.
And yes, in a dangerous world, silence can require strength.
